I’m In Love With A Skateboarder

I’ve been fascinated with skateboarders from day one.

I always had this feeling that I would end up with a skateboarder someday, so you can imagine how excited I was to find out Joe was the whole package!

I remember growing up watching the Simpsons, and I had the biggest crush on Bart. Yes, he’a a cartoon character… But I was a kid, and kids are weird… Especially when it comes to their first crushes, right? I think I loved the fact that he was a free spirit, the bad boy, and that skateboarding was a skill that made him stand out from everyone else.

Being with Joe has definitely opened my eyes to the lifestyle behind the sport. I’m not even exaggerating when I say that skateboarding is Joe’s entire life- He skates almost every day, and suffers emotionally if he’s not able to get on his board for at least an hour after he get’s off work.

He eats, sleeps, and breathes skateboarding. If he’s not out there riding his board, you can bet your bottom dollar that he’s searching the internet for skate videos, following-up on his favorite pro skaters’ social media updates, or editing his own skate videos that he recorded earlier that day.

Skateboarding is what keeps my boyfriend alive… Literally.

Joe has battled cancer 3 different times in his life, and the only thing that kept him motivated to fight another day was getting on his board, and continuing to push himself to learn new tricks. Chemo and radiation treatments took a lot from him- His hair, his strength, and his energy… But it sure as hell wasn’t going to take away the one thing he loves most.  You can see a video interview, where Joe explains the whole story here: If I Can Still Move, I’m Fine.

The other day there was a news story on Facebook about two guys who got into a fight at a local skate park. Some of the things that people were saying about skateboarders definitely raised a few eyebrows from Joe and his friends.

Joe is 30, has had a full-time job with great pay/benefits for over 10 years now, and is the last thing from being a “wanna be”. How many other 30 year olds can say they’re as physically active, motivated, and as passionate about something as Joe? How is skateboarding any less than your adult softball league? Or a day spent drinking while riding around in a golf cart, putting a ball around?

Skateboarding is phenomenal. The amount of dedication those guys have seriously blows my mind… They spend hours trying to perfect their skills and learning something new, and are willing to get a few scrapes, bruises, and broken bones while they strive to meet their goals for that day.

The sad thing is, most people don’t understand this side of the art. Yes, there’s losers out there who skateboard… Just like there’s guys in the NFL who beat their wives, and sex offenders that live in the white house. But people choose to stereotype skaters because they’ve never been given the chance to see just how inspiring picking up a board can be to someone.

Skating has seriously saved my boyfriend’s life… And you have no idea how much I appreciate that.

Joe can skateboard every day for the next 50 years, and I’m never going to complain about it. He’s doing what he loves, which makes me the happiest girl in the world.
